October 2011 Cumulative Update for SharePoint

By Stanisław DelostNo Comments

Microsoft just released new Cumulative Update for SharePoint 2010- October 2011 Cumulative Update.

As with previous cumulative updates, it is built upon SP1 bits so you should apply SP1 if you don’t already have it and then install October 2011 Cumulative Update.

Remember that it’s fresh, which means you shouldn’t install it on ANY production environment before you test it.

The new build number for October 2011 Cumulative Update is: 14.0.6112.5000.

You can download October 2011 Cumulative Update here:

SharePoint Server 2010 October 2011 Cumulative Update

Lets keep an eye on this CU package, I hope it’ll be as good as August 2011 CU!

Explorer view error when uploading some file types to Document Library

By Stanisław DelostNo Comments
webdav error

Recently we had an issue with Explorer View in SharePoint 2010, that prevented users from uploading .mdb files to SharePoint document library.

It was working using normal upload option through the browser. It was verified that the Application General Settings were correct and the mdb extension wasn’t listed in the Blocked File Types list.

When user tried to upload mdb file in Explorer View, he got error:

Could not find this item. This is no longer located in \\YourSite\DavWWWRoot\Site. Verify the item’s location and try again.

Powershell Script to find Missing Features

By Stanisław DelostNo Comments

Recently I needed to find the MOSS 2007 migration issues on the SPS 2010 farm. After running the test-spcontentdatabase powershell on my content database, I’ve discovered that there are lots of missing features, like:

Database [contentdb_name] has reference(s) to a missing feature: Id = [1234146d-6ada-4931-ab81-12349de7008e]. The feature with Id 1234146d-6ada-4931-ab81-12349de7008e is referenced in the database [contentdb_name], but is not installed on the current farm. The missing feature may cause upgrade to fail. Please install any solution which contains the feature and restart upgrade if necessary.

I’ve decided to list all site collections where the missing features appeared. Because it was a large farm with about 20 missing feature ID’s, I’ve built a simple powershell script to do the job.

Here’s the script.

All you need to do is change the <feature GUID> with your missing ID’s. As a result, you’ll get a table containing Feature ID, Site Collection URL and Content Database name.

When you have all that data, it is now simple to perform a cleanup, using stsadm -o uninstallfeature, stsadm -o deactivatefeature with -force parameter, and the Feature Admin tool which I propose to use if any other solution fails. Having the complete site collection URL’s will help you to determine if missing features are actually needed somewhere and also lets you check these site collections later to find if they still works as expected.

BCS – There are no addresses available for this application error

By Stanisław Delost1 Comment

Recently I had a weird error just after configuring Business Connectivity Services in Central Administration. When I tried to access management site for BCS Service application I’ve got the error message: There are no addresses available for this application.

Error that show up when accessing BCS Application Management Site

Actually the solution appeared to be very simple! I’ve configured BCS in Service Applications section, but forgot to turn on the Business Data Connectivity Service in Services on Server section.

Business Data Connectivity Service Stopped

I’ve started the service, but the error still show up when I tried to access BCS Service Management Site. Then I made IISReset on the Central Administration server and the BCS started working as expected in the first place. Hope it’ll help you.

Feedback about SharePoint 2010 August 2011 Cumulative Update

By Stanisław DelostNo Comments

I’ve been through most SharePoint 2010 Cumulative Updates, including the very failed ones like December 2010 CU which caused one of my client to perform Disaster Recovery on production environment.

I was usually reporting issues and errors with Cumulative Updates to the community, but this time it’ll be all different. I would like to confirm to everyone interested, that finally there is a good set of updates for SharePoint Foundation, SharePoint Server 2010 and Project Server – it is a Service Pack 1 + August 2011 Cumulative Update.

If you are currently at RTM, holding for a good time to upgrade – you can safely do it now. You will experience a lot faster User Profile Service (on one of my clients, the incremental profile import shortened from 1 hour to 10 minutes!). All the features that comes with SP1 are out of this scope, you can find that information for example HERE, but I wanted to focus on the SP1+August2011 stability.

Finally, the User Profile Service neverending story is solved and all environments with SP1 and August2011 CU bits are now peaceful and free of UPS issues.

To know the package I appreciate so much now, and to download it, visit Stefan Goßner blog.

Thank you Microsoft, for a good package and for a peace on my work desk!

General troubleshooting SharePoint Farm

By Stanisław DelostNo Comments

When I help people on SharePoint forums, there is always a big number of questions that can be answered easily almost “from the template”. For me, the troubleshooting is intuitive and I do it with “closed eyes” after having to handle hundreds of requests, issues and bugs of SharePoint for more than 3 years.

I think that not every SharePoint admin knows how to troubleshoot, where to start, where to look – so I’ve decided to write this basic post to let you all know how I start debugging typical issues. It is a design that lets you successfully fix most known errors in the farm and save your time and sanity for better things.

Scripting Center on Technet

By Stanisław Delost4 Comments

If you are looking for a place where the Microsoft admin community posts their useful Windows PowerShell or VB scripts – look no further.

On the Technet pages there is a place for a person like me (and probably you!) where we can leech scripts and learn from them (and later – share our own). Continue reading this entry »
